Gary Tinsley Memorial Scholarship Fund
On April 6, 2012, the University of Minnesota and the Golden Gopher football team lost one of its family when Gary Tinsley passed away due to an enlarged heart. Gary's family was awarded his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Marketing Education (BME) posthumously at the CEHD graduation commencement on May 10, 2012.
Besides being known as an outstanding football player (finishing second on the team in tackles in 2011), Gary was a true "Student-Athlete". Gary evolved into a diligent and innovative student. His classmates and instructors acknowledge his work ethic, leadership skills and his infectious smile.
The football team is remembering Gary in a number of ways this year. The team is wearing a GT51 patch on its game jerseys and there is a GT51 sticker on each practice helmet. There is also a large mural of Gary right inside the team's locker room doors at the Gibson-Nagurski practice facility. A new award will be given out each year to a player on the team who best embraced Tinsley's "underdog" attitude.
However, the best way for Gopher Fans to honor Gary Tinsley is through the newly created Gary Tinsley Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Fund was created to remember and honor Gary, while at the same time providing undergraduate students in the Business Marketing Education program opportunities for financial assistance. The fund is operated by the Minnesota Foundation at the University of Minnesota.
With University of Minnesota students, faculty and staff donating their time for the Fund, 100% of donations collected go directly to the Gary Tinsley Memorial Scholarship Fund. Fifty percent (50%) of all funds collected will be used to endow a perpetual scholarship in Gary Tinsley's name. The additional fifty percent (50%) will be used to provide financial assistance for undergraduate students during the 2013-2014 academic year. These scholarships will be awarded at the Spring Scholarship Awards Dinner.
